Tunisia’s Dhafer Youssef and New Orleans’s Chief Adjuah (formerly Christian Scott) represent distinct musical legacies in the modern jazz scene. Each has also found a way of keeping relevant instruments that are centuries-old: Dhafer with the oud, Chief with his self-created, kora-like “adjuah bow.” Together they speak of and demonstrate these traditional approaches.
