Laufey is Icelandic and Chinese, and learned the piano and cello as a child, but was also inspired by her violin-playing mother and her father, who would regularly play Ella Fitzgerald around the house. Now in her twenties, Laufey is currently one of the fastest rising stars who has found popularity with Gen Z. Other pop idols such as Billie Eilish and the K-pop act BTS are fans of her dreamy compositions, which blur the lines between jazz and pop. Her sound is slightly reminiscent of Chet Baker, but just as his voice molded itself to the timbre of his trumpet, Laufey’s in turn resembles the deep sound of the cello. She only began songwriting a few years ago, but meanwhile has managed to generate millions of streams within the past two years, and her performances at festivals easily appeal to listeners across the generations. Her latest album A Night At The Symphony features the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.
