You start with a new rock ‘n’ roll band whose members explore their shared love of hip-hop and obscure soul. Then you add a classically trained saxophonist who specializes in chamber music. What do you get? Nothing at all until the saxophonist, Durand Jones, discovers that he can sing, and realizes that he grew up in Louisiana in a household bursting with gospel and classic soul. And so a new band was born: Durand Jones & The Indications, a group that can fill the void left by Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones. The group’s album and live shows are impressive. Sometimes you hear a hint of rock ‘n’ roll but more often the band scorches and blazes a trail through the soul landscape with a funk sound reminiscent of The Meters accompanied by driving organ grooves and Al Green-like vocals.
