Steve Lehman (New York, 1978) alto saxophonist, bandleader and teacher is regarded as one of the most original and visionary jazz musicians of the 21st century. The New York Times acclaimed his debut album Travail, Transformation & Flow (2009) as the best jazz album of that year. On that record, Lehman and his octet push back the boundaries of contemporary music. His compositions are a spectacular synthesis of rhythm and melody, full of details and layers, and yet always transparent and visual. The breathtaking follow-up album Mise En Abîme (2014) was unanimously praised by well-known critics. Lehman has written pieces for the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra and the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), among others. At the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Steve Lehman Octet will delight the audience with a dynamic performance of spectral music with otherworldly sonorities and improvisations that make clear why Lehman’s music can be found high on the jazz charts, time and again.
