Dino Saluzzi was only seven years old when his father, composer and multi-instrumentalist Cayetano Saluzzi, taught him to play several instruments. The bandoneon quickly became his favorite and at age fourteen his command of the instrument was already good enough for him to lead his own band, Trio Carnaval. More or less in the shadow of Ástor Piazzolla he worked on an oeuvre that is at least equally impressive as that of the other Argentine master. Saluzzi has stayed far away from Piazzolla's "tango nuevo" and in interviews he has repeatedly stressed that he does not make intellectual art music but rather music that attempts to touch as wide a scale of emotions as possible. And Saluzzi does not stop at trying: his music is 100 percent emotion. The theme of his concert at the 2008 North Sea Jazz Festival is his penultimate album Juan Condori (2006). Condori was a childhood friend of Saluzzi and a man to whom the bandeonist attaches an almost magical quality. You can hear this quality in the music, a complex but always accessible blend of tango, jazz and folk music.
