Talking Cows is a brand-new Dutch quartet started by pianist Robert Jan Vermeulen and saxophonist Frans Vermeersen. Vermeulen has always been more of a straight ahead bebop man, but in the last few years he got more interested in iconoclastic pianists like Misha Mengelberg and Thelonious Monk. Thus he moved, bit by bit, into the direction of avant-garde and improvised music. Frans Vermeersen has been in the vanguard of Dutch progressive music for years. Yet, he has never denied his love for fifties and sixties jazz. Nevertheless he also started to explore a terrain that had never been fully his. In collaboration with Vermeulen he developed a new, fresh jazz style that came into existence in the twilight zone between impro and bop. They both wrote new pieces for the Talking Cows debut CD Bovinity. The quartet is completed by the talented young bassist Dion Nijland and drum talent Yonga Sun, winner of the Dutch Jazz Competition 2005.
