For the very first time, bassist Christian McBride and saxophonist Joshua Redman will be sharing a Dutch stage as a duo – and it’s happening at this festival. Not that these two jazz greats haven’t worked together before, of course. McBride was a member of Redman’s first quartet in the early 1990s, together with pianist Brad Mehldau and drummer Brian Blade, and played on the album MoodSwing (1994). Redman repaid the favor by featuring on McBride’s debut album, 1995’s Getting’ To It. Between then and now, the two musicians crossed paths regularly and also made their own headlines; they have each released over 20 albums, garnered prestigious awards and performed with a vast array of jazz luminaries. In 2020, Redman reunited with his original quartet, including McBride, to record the album RoundAgain and returned in 2022 with LongGone.
