Who is the most famous “grand old man” of Dutch jazz? Inevitably, Hans Dulfer (1940) is the answer. With his illustrious bands (including Perikels, Reflud and Big Boy) he worked his way up to become the most celebrated saxophonist in the Netherlands. He was also present at the birth of the Dutch jazz scene, as an organizer, advisor (also for North Sea Jazz!) and co-founder of the Bimhuis. Dulfer played psychedelic free jazz, created the first Dutch world music and was the first jazz musician to collaborate with house DJs. Even in his fifties, he was able to achieve pop-star status in Japan. He still prefers to play live, at the most diverse venues and with unflagging energy. Dulfer has made radio programs for years, written columns, published two books and acted in films and series. He now takes to the stage with a relatively new band under the name Dulfer!
