Good news for anyone who enjoyed Terri Lyne Carrington’s New Standards last year: the drummer and bandleader is giving her inspiring show a welcome reprise this year. The project stemmed from her book New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets By Women Composers, in which she compiled more than a century of sheet music by women composers. Why? Because women in jazz have been undervalued until now, a wrong that Carrington, as a fighter for equity and inclusiveness, is eager to right. She continued that mission on the album New Standards Vol. 1 as well as on stages with her eponymous band. In Rotterdam last year, the audience was treated to a selection from female jazz history for the first time. This year, some classics will once again be featured. Carrington will also curate the Missouri Hall on Friday, where she is presenting leading young female talent of her own choosing.
