If you want to know what a big band can sound like in our present time, then look no further than Darcy James Argue (1975). Originally from Canada, this jazz pianist, composer, arranger and big band leader started the Secret Society in 2005. His intention was to reinvent the big band concept for the 21st century. In 2014, he also performed at the festival with his 18-piece orchestra, which had a huge impact on the audience due to its spectacular audio and visual richness. The orchestra is based in Brooklyn and has received numerous rave reviews. “It's maximalist music of impressive complexity and immense entertainment value, in your face and then in your head” according to the Village Voice. His latest effort is the album Dynamic Maximum Tension, where Argue pays tribute to innovators of the 20th century such as Duke Ellington.
