For the record,
Butcher Brown is a quintet, not a man. The name comes from a character in the PlayStation game
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing who really made the band members laugh. They also felt the name was a perfect fit for their eclectic sound, which fuses jazz, hip-hop, soul, funk and R&B into a sultry whole. Significantly, their list of influences ranges from D’Angelo and the Roots to Weather Report. If the five musicians from Richmond, Virginia have to describe their sound at all, they opt for solar music – which also happens to be the title of the album they released last year on the famed Concord Jazz label.
Solar Music is the latest high point in a career that dates back to 2009 and now boasts nine albums and many performances across the globe. Screaming keyboards, intense drums, sophisticated guitar solos and out front the multi-talented powerhouse Marcus “Tennishu” Tenney make every performance an experience.
