The funk and soul from the southern United States is inherently fat-sounding, and Boukou Groove serve theirs up with an extra splash of goodness. The trio’s material is steeped in the tradition of New Orleans soul and funk, and the key to its sound is lead singer Donnie Sundal's deep Moog bass synth. Layered over the top of that swampy foundation is his charismatic voice, which is sometimes reminiscent of Curtis Mayfield. The funky guitar is credited to Big D, whose sound is as solid as his name. The group are a firm fixture within the New Orleans funk scene, but since their formation in 2010 their audience has been steadily increasing elsewhere, which is also partially down to their international festival slots. Their latest album from 2023 is called Groovin' – and that's exactly what they do.
