Cuban pianist, singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and bandleader Roberto Fonseca was just 15 years old when he took to the stage at the Havana Jazz Festival, where he now wields his artistic sway as the successor of grandmaster Chucho Valdés. The Grammy-nominated Fonseca is certainly no ordinary jazz Joe: he became world famous for his participation in Buena Vista Social Club, as well as collaborating with major names in music such as Trombone Shorty and Fatoumata Diawara. Fonseca explores various musical styles, dances and rhythms, stringing together elements of Cuba, jazz and Africa. With his virtuoso piano playing, he’s also highly experimental, and easily blends hip-hop and electronica into his music. On his latest album La Gran Diversión, he embarks on a fascinating journey through the colorful musical legacy of his homeland, inviting Ahoy to get up and move to his sizzling mix of jazz and Latin.
