Alto saxophonist Sam Newbould (b. 1990) was a finalist in the 2021 Dutch Jazz Competition. Originally from the Yorkshire countryside in northern England, he settled in Amsterdam in 2016, after a brief stint in Berlin. He graduated from the Amsterdam University of the Arts in 2019. The spirit of his native region resonates in all his pieces. Following the albums Blencathra and Bogus Notus, his third album Homing will be released this year. Newbould’s quintet consists of Bernard van Rossum (tenor saxophone), Xavi Torres (piano), Jort Terwijn (bass) and Guy Salamon (drums). After winning a grant from the prestigious Keep an Eye Foundation in 2019, the group became increasingly popular with jazz audiences. Newbould has been described as an “archetypal jazz outsider”. He possesses an unfettered approach as a composer, creating music that is unashamedly audacious, masterful and of a beautiful and raw simplicity.
