Something Else! is a soul jazz revue led by saxophonist Vincent Herring (b. 1964). The septet has a changing lineup and in Herring’s words, “It’s the best musicians playing great music and enjoying it thoroughly, which becomes infectious”. The band plays new arrangements of classics by giants of the soul jazz genre (including Freddie Hubbard, George Benson, Horace Silver and Bobby Timmons) plus original compositions in the same style – but just a bit different. On the debut album Something Else!, to be released this year on Smoke Records, Herrings is joined by trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, saxophonist James Carter, guitarist Paul Bollenback, pianist David Kikoski, bassist Essiet Essiet and drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts. So big names – a supergroup for a real jazz party. Other musicians are often eager to join in, so performances are always a surprise.
