England’s capital London has been known for years as a hotbed for vibrant, cross-over jazz. However, much further north of the country, up in Leeds, there’s also plenty of creativeness busting out of the walls of rehearsal rooms and clubs. The fourteen-piece Ancient Infinity Orchestra is one of the standard-bearers of the cool Northern Jazz sound. Led by double bassist and composer Ozzy Moysey, the band goes all out on stage with a lineup featuring keyboards, harp, violin, oboe, cello, two bassists and tenor saxes, flute and percussion. For their debut album River Of Light (2023), the impressive ensemble delved deep into the lush pool of soulful, spiritual jazz nurtured by such greats such as John and Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, but were also inspired by the vulnerable, warm sound of trumpeter Matthew Halsall and the poetic aspect of saxophonist Alabaster de Plume. Come see these ambitious young virtuosos deliver a show that is simultaneously fun as well as a cosmic, meditative experience.
