Would they listen to jazz on another planet? If so, it’s easy to imagine them listening to the music of Sungazer. The duo formed by YouTuber and bassist Adam Neely and drummer Shawn Crowder started out in Brooklyn, New York in 2014 with a form of futuristic jazz that at the same time sounds comfortably familiar. They toy with time and space in songs that straddle the line between jazz improvisation and early experiments with electronic music. Yet their album Perihelion sounds very 21st-century, or even beyond that. The duo have a feeling for the dance floor, but if there is ever a straightforward dance beat, it’s only for a few bars. Sungazer’s futuristic, electronic jazz is never predictable, always exciting. Especially for NN North Sea Jazz they are performing their music with a Dutch big band: Sungazer Plus.
