Singer-songwriter Jazmine Sullivan grew up in Philadelphia. She sang in the church choir as a child, and it was some time before she was introduced to secular music. Now she makes soulful R&B in which she combines deep, gospelesque vocals and acoustic guitar with tight hip-hop beats and explicit lyrics. In 2008, Sullivan debuted with the album Fearless, followed by Love Me Back (2010), Reality Show (2015) and the 2021 EP Heaux Tales. In many of her songs, Sullivan deals with relationships in which mental and physical violence played a role. She now describes some of those songs as “a little too personal,” but they haven’t hurt her: she now has two Grammy Awards and two BET Awards under her belt, and she went platinum with the singles Pick Up Your Feelings and Girl Like Me (with H.E.R.). Now Sullivan is ready for her very first European tour and this festival performance is her first ever in the Netherlands.
