The ArtEZ Big Collective is the orchestra of the Conservatory of Jazz & Pop in the Dutch city of Arnhem. The ensemble mainly plays compositions and arrangements by Jasper le Clercq and Philipp Rüttgers and consists of a rhythm section, horns, strings and vocals; a challenging lineup which is eagerly used by both leaders. Like the lessons, the orchestra goes in all directions stylistically: jazz, pop, improvisation, folk, fusion, you name it. There is always room for spontaneous actions and freedom in the moment. The two leaders of the ArtEZ Big Collective each have musical careers outside of the big band: violinist Le Clercq is known as a member of improvising string quartet Zapp4 in addition to running his own Jasper le Clercq Quartet, among other projects. Pianist Rütgers is German by origin but has been active in the Dutch jazz scene for 15 years. At the festival, he will also perform with his Philipp Rütgers Trio.
