In their music, guitarist Gijs Idema and vocalist Anna Serierse seek to combine their instruments in original ways. The duo, supported by bassist Cas Jiskoot and drummer Tim Hennekes, form a unit with a real feel for freedom, melody, rhythm and form. The songs sound delicately whimsical and unpredictable with a touch of humor and poetry. Their 2020 debut album Motus was immediately nominated for an Edison. Separately, the two musicians have also won several awards, including an Expression of Art Award and a Stichting Jazz Talent Award. Last year, they released the follow-up album Cloud Studies, for which the duo drew inspiration from the cloud studies of the British painters William Turner and John Constable. The Idema/Serierse Quartet transposes those painting styles onto their unique new musical canvas.
