The BvR Flamenco Big Band is the brainchild of the Spanish-Dutch saxophonist, composer, arranger and bandleader Bernard van Rossum. This is not just any ol’ big band, but an innovative, sizeable ensemble comprising leading Spanish jazz and flamenco musicians, in which Van Rossum combines swinging jazz with traditional flamenco, such as its typical singing style, and rhythmic guitar and rousing hand claps. In Van Rossum's compositions and arrangements, flamenco harmonies and rhythms are redefined by beautiful, colorful orchestrations and big band dynamics. The band won the 2014 MeerJazz International Big Band Competition and the 2015 Keep An Eye Jazz Award. They also collaborated with harmonica virtuoso Antonio Serrano and singer David de Jacoba, both known for their long-standing collaboration with the legendary Paco de Lucía. The band's debut album Jaleo Holandés received rave reviews, and led to the festival’s initial booking of the band in 2015.
