With her beautiful voice, wonderful songs and eclectic sound, Emily King has the whole package. Just listen to her playful melodies, falsetto vocals and her songs’ tight rhythms, and the influence of Prince becomes clearly audible. Like the Purple One, King draws on funk and soul traditions as well as pop history, but that's where the comparison ends. The singer-songwriter grew up in New York as the child of two musicians. Her career has spanned over two decades, and includes collaborations with the likes of Brittany Howard, Nora Jones, Robert Glasper and John Legend. Last year, she released her fourth studio album, Special Occasion. On that record, which she called a 'break-up, make-up and break-up' record, she explores the darkest boundaries of her soul following the demise of a relationship. In doing so, she doesn’t shy away from excursions into country, but does so in her own, light-hearted way.
