Above all, you have to want to be self-sufficient. When the band Vulfpeck played for a sold-out house at Madison Square Garden in 2019, they had arranged everything without a manager. Musical autonomy is the credo of this spectacular funk jazz group that already has six albums to its name; the last was 2022’s Schvitz. Vulfpeck (the name is pseudo-German) was formed in 2011 by founding members Jack Stratton on keyboards, drums and guitar, Theo Katzman on guitar, drums and vocals, Woody Goss on keyboards, and Joe Dart on bass. The members met each other while studying music at the University of Michigan. What they imagined was a German version of major session bands like The Funk Brothers and The Wrecking Crew. Vulpeck’s lineup can expand live to seven musicians or more. Their live performances are considered upbeat breakbeat parties, bursting with slick rhythms and meaty grooves that get every room rocking.
