Sun-Mi Hong (In-Cheon, South Korea, 1990) started playing drums as a teenager, and then attended Howon University’s Conservatory. There, the emphasis was mainly on pop music, which she didn't really feel a connection with. A fellow student recommended that she listen to drummer Brian Blade, which was a revelation. In 2011 she was admitted to the jazz course of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (Amsterdam University of the Arts). After that, she acquired a permanent place in the Dutch jazz scene, with her compositions full of catchy melodies and impressionistic sound patterns. Her quintet includes a number of top international musicians she met in Amsterdam, such as trumpeter Alistair Payne, saxophonist Nicolò Ricci, pianist Chaerin Im and bassist Alessandro Fongaro. In 2018, she won the Sena Dutch Jazz Competition with her group, and her album A Self-Strewn Portrait received the prestigious Edison Award in 2021. In 2022, the Edition label released her third album Third Page: Resonance.
