Tunisian composer and oud player Dhafer Youssef became a global phenomenon by using a traditional Arabic string instrument to claim a place for himself in Western music. In the process, he drew inspiration from an international multicolored palette of styles, covering just about every corner of the globe. In his forward-looking compositions, the 56-year-old artist seamlessly blends various cultural influences such as jazz, and Arabic, electronic and classical music. Last year, he released his tenth album Street Of Minarets (2023), on which legends such as Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, Nguyên Lê and Dave Holland accompany the oud master. But those who want to experience the real power of Youssef's music must see him at work live on stage. His performances are a celebration of diversity and a reminder of the power of music to connect people regardless of their background or origin.
