The biggest name drummer Mark Guiliana has on his long list of collaborations is, without a doubt, David Bowie. Guiliana had the honor of playing on Bowie's very last album, Black Star (2016). But his collaborations with people like St. Vincent, Avishai Cohen, Brad Mehldau and Meshell Ndegeocello also enhance his status as one of the most important jazz drummers of recent years. Since 2016, Guiliana has released several critically acclaimed albums with his own quartet.the sound of listening, released last year, is driven by introspective piano themes and showcases Guiliana's more contemplative side. The title and theme stem from the book Silence by Thích Nhất Hạnh, and are, according to the drummer, about “the inner silence required to truly observe the world.” From the sessions for the album, Guiliana was able to create another one: Mischief (2023). He is anything but silent during live performances when he propels his quartet with relentless intensity and drive.
