Singer Jacob Lusk actually doesn't need a microphone at all. If he fills his lungs with air, he can knock a room over with an unamplified voice that glides from baritone to soprano and from gospel to opera. But producers Ari Balouzian and Ryan Hope are just as important to the success of the band Gabriels: they complete the group’s sound – which ranges from pulsing strings full of seventies soul to precisely tempered pre-war blues. The trio caused a stir in 2021 with their first EP Love And Hate In A Different Time. They released the first part of their impressive debut album Angels & Queens last year and completed it this year with part two. The album is the result of a collaboration with Sounwave, known as Kendrick Lamar's producer. Like Lusk, the latter two hail from Compton, a tough part of Los Angeles that is best known for hip-hop. And that, too, echoes in Gabriels' music.
