For the second consecutive year, the jazz departments of Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen, Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and Codarts Rotterdam have put together a big band with students from these three music institutions: ARKestra. The ensemble is conducted by Codarts teacher and trombonist Ilja Reijngoud. The basis is the Codarts Big Band, which has been around for over 30 years and has performed at various festivals both in the Netherlands and abroad. The band is known for its wide repertoire, which ranges from traditional jazz to Latin, flamenco, Syrian, Indian, Chinese and Brazilian music. This year, ARKestra will honour the music of Wayne Shorter. His music is timeless and eclectic, and serves as an inspiration for a young generation of jazz musicians. Tineke Postma, who knew the recently deceased saxophonist well, is an internationally renowned soloist and a connoisseur of Shorter’s music. Together with Kika Sprangers and Nabou Claerhout she will be at the forefront of this big band.
