Master guitarist Jim Hall (1930–2013) passed away ten years ago, but he is far from gone from our memories. Jazz connoisseurs and musicians alike still recognize the formidable status of the man who grew up in Cleveland, Ohio where he was inspired by legendary guitarist Charlie Christian on a Benny Goodman record. It was a spiritual awakening for him. Hall played on albums by such giants as Ella Fitzgerald, Bill Evans, Sonny Rollins and Quincy Jones and also made many records in his own name. Many may see him primarily as a superb accompanist but that doesn’t do him justice; for example, he wrote many compositions that were also played by others. His subtle guitar playing is still a model for young musicians today. This tribute concert is the result of an initiative of jazz connoisseur and North Sea Jazz presenter Kees van Boven in collaboration with Tony Overwater and Maarten van der Grinten.
