Five-time Grammy winner esperanza spalding is one of the current jazz generation’s biggest talents. On Saturday, she will host three interactive workshops entitled Songwrights Apothecary Lab Hosts A Co-Musicking Lab, in which she focuses on the perception and experience of music. As she explains it herself: “I started this idea during the pandemic. I wanted to study how music can be healing and decided to start a testing ground with music therapists, neuro scientists, students and musicians. In that experimental garden we explore what exactly music does to a person.”
“This isn’t for anything other than keeping us well”.
- Dr. Marisol Norris.
In this 45 - 60 minutes co-musicking lab/practice, the hierarchy and binary of audience/performer & professional/amateur is laid aside. All beings in the room are welcomed – as contributors – into the restorative field of intentional, collective composition, a.k.a., co-musicking. Informed by research and practice through the Songwrights Apothecary Lab, participants will co-compose music in response to various real-time answers to the question “what do you need music to tend to today?”.
These sessions will be led using specific (and emergent) techniques which support collective musical creation, supported by professional improvisation-based musicians. Each co-musicking session will be led by bassist/composer/vocalist esperanza spalding, along with Songwrights Apothecary Lab council-member Dr. Marisol Norris, and will be followed by a short debrief session for participants.
