Alto and soprano saxophonist Kenny Garrett (b. 1960) has an impressive number of albums to his name. He made most of them after his career with Miles Davis, with whose band he played for several years during Davis’ “electric period” and recorded the album Amandla (1989), among others. The albums Garrett recorded with other greats, such as Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard and Chick Corea, also form an enviable list. In the 1990s, he blossomed as a solo artist. Garrett has received multiple Grammy nominations, including his first in 1998 for the album Songbook. He has won DownBeat's readers' poll as best alto saxophonist an impressive twelve times. Garrett’s most recent project is Sounds From The Ancestors, an album that explores the roots of Black music. On it, the saxophonist also returns to memories of his childhood in Detroit, where he not only soaked up the sound of John Coltrane but also that of Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin.
