Pianist Wolfert Brederode (1974) first received violin lessons as a youngster, but an impatient teacher resulted in him curtailing that career early on. After that experience, the young Brederode focused entirely on the piano. In 1997, his first trio album Alternate Views was released, and in 2007 he recorded Currents for the illustrious ECM label: an album awash with colorful ideas and poetic soundscapes. Brederode grew up with both classical and jazz reverberating around the family living room. This is still evident in the project Ruins And Remains, which he performs together with percussionist Joost Lijbaart and the Matangi String Quartet. It is a suite (also released by ECM) that Brederode already wrote back in 2018 for the commemoration of the ending of WWI. In the years that followed, he expanded upon this theme, allowing more than enough room for collective improvisations. The versatile drummer Lijbaart (1967) is ideally suited to a challenging project of that nature, as is the adventurous Matangi Quartet.
