The Staple Singers have performed at the festival several times, but this is something completely different. The Staples Jr. Singers were formed when a group of teenagers from Aberdeen, Mississippi formed a band in 1971, naming themselves after their great role models. Having grown up with gospel, they decided to mix it up a bit and added a hip soul edge. Every weekend, the teens toured the southern states of the US, where officially, there was no more segregation, but they would still constantly have an anxious wait to see if they could get food for instance. In the mid-1970s, the group recorded an album that is now being re-released: When Do We Get Paid. We’re now over half a century and three generations on, and although some of the original members have died, Annie Brown Caldwell (vocals), Edward Brown (vocals) and A.R.C. Brown (guitar) have recruited a new rhythm section from within the family.
