When trumpeter/flugelhorn player Teus Nobel released his album Journey Of Man in 2019, it received high praise from the music press, and was considered a big surprise and a major highlight of contemporary Dutch jazz. While composing it, Nobel found inspiration in the book Journey Of Man, which claims humanity is descended from a single man. In 2023, he continued along that track with the album Human First (For Bix), which featured guitarist Teis Semey in a prominent role. The title refers to his newborn son Bix, but also to a Herbie Hancock quote. The album is a reflection on the identity crisis Nobel suffered during lockdown. He has a penchant for refined works; some of which are also recommended by band members (such as pianist Alexander von Popta and drummer Tuur Moens). Nobel’s incredible musicianship clearly reveals the influence of his role model Woody Shaw. The name Liberty Group speaks volumes, as it describes perfectly the musical path Nobel has taken.
