Marcus Miller won't get lost in Rotterdam anytime soon, as for decades, the award-winning bassist has been a cherished presence at the festival. His previous visit was in 2018, the year of his Grammy-nominated album Laid Black (Blue Note Records), and once again, this summertime will be ‘Miller Time’ in Rotterdam. His fans know just what that means: an energetic show where countless musical styles are effortlessly mixed. With his irresistible groovy bass sound as the common element, he takes listeners along a varied route of R&B, trap, funk, hip-hop and jazz. His compositions are sometimes laid-back, sometimes uplifting, but always catchy. No matter what he plays, Miller’s jazz roots always form the key element; a feature given away by his characteristic pork pie hat, which was a popular accessory in jazz circles in the 1940s. Miller himself once said, “I play funk and rock and R&B but my hat is always jazz.”
