FELIX ZIMMERMANN
Besides Gard Nilssen’s Supersonic Orchestra, Norwegian drummer Gard Nilssen (b. 1983) also has the bands SpaceMonkey, Bushman’s Revenge, Amgala Temple and the Gard Nilssen Acoustic Unity at his disposal. Apart from being a drummer, he is a composer, producer and bandleader and is among the most sought-after and active percussionists on the European jazz scene. Nilssen comes from a family of percussionists, so the choice of that instrument was obvious. His Supersonic Orchestra is unquestionably spectacular. It can accommodate as many as 10 horn players, three double bassists and three drummers, with the saxophone section also sounding downright sensational. It is actually Nilssen’s dream orchestra and he was able to form it when he was Artist In Residence at Molde Jazz (2019). Nilssen himself provides the arrangements in collaboration with saxophonist/bass clarinetist André Roligheten. A hybrid of experimentation and improvisation: music that’s free, loaded with decibels and yet also melodic and expressive.
