The idea of diversity in jazz is a relatively new initiative – or is it? Some might say that the current ideals of diversity and inclusion are already in the long-running, liberal ideals of the jazz world. But others would argue that the jazz world – like Western society in general – is in dire need of self-reflection and awareness, to recognize ingrained biases and inequalities that need to be challenged and changed. The drummer/bandleader Terri Lyne Carrington is the founder of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, and Monica Akihary is the Dutch/Moluccan vocalist of Boi Akih, and also a curator of the Sounds of Diversity program during the NN North Sea Jazz Festival. It will be a timely (and timelessly relevant) discussion on a topic that will invite questions and comments from all.
