The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is one of the United States' premier big bands and traditional jazz orchestras. Each year, the 15-piece New York-based orchestra gives hundreds of performances and educational workshops in their hometown and elsewhere in the United States and worldwide. The ensemble has a broad repertoire ranging from commissioned compositions to period pieces by the likes of Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Ornette Coleman. The orchestra is led by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis who is a leading authority in jazz. Marsalis began studying classical music at the Julliard School in New York and discovered jazz there as well. He soon found himself on stage with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Since 1982, Marsalis has recorded over a hundred jazz and classical albums. He has won nine Grammys as well as the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Music.
