Seven is Dutch formation Tristan’s seventh album to be released so far. The brainchild of versatile keyboardist, composer and producer Coen Molenaar is deeply rooted in the British acid jazz that reigned supreme in the 1980s and 90s. The band effortlessly merges funk, jazz and pop, and the influence of inspirational acts Incognito and Brand New Heavies is clearly audible. Even so, Tristan manages to sound original, fresh and current, and their music is loaded with catchy melodies, refined hooks and exciting grooves. Add to that the sparkling vocals of Moluccan singer Jaycilee Teterissa, and the ingredients for this lively quintet are complete. A sign that their popularity isn’t just limited to their own country is evident from the ever-growing number of dates they’re playing across the border. They’re performing in England, France, Japan and Indonesia, among other countries, and so the debut of this un-Dutch, spirited quintet at the festival has certainly not come too soon.
