Singer Minyeshu is very much a child of two worlds. She grew up in Ethiopia where she was recognized as a great singing and dancing talent and she toured every continent with the prestigious Ethiopian National Theatre from Addis Ababa. Due to the unsafe situation, she fled from her native country to Belgium in 1996. Then two years later she made the Netherlands her permanent home. In her work, Minyeshu Kifle takes modern and traditional East African music with a touch of funk and reggae and turns it into swinging Ethio-jazz. BBC radio presenter Charlie Gillett once described the Brabant-based vocalist glowingly as Ethiopia’s answer to Sheryl Crow. Minyeshu has already shared the stage with African stars such as Salif Keita and Youssou N'Dour and last year she released her fifth album Netsa. At NN North Sea Jazz, Minyeshu is backed by an eight-piece band, and she will undoubtedly win even more fans with her Western sound full of the flavors of the Horn of Africa.
