Few people are as creative as composer and bandleader Maria Schneider (b. 1960), who early in her career was an assistant to Gil Evans. In 1992 she started her own orchestra packed with standout New York musicians, with which she played in Greenwich Village for five years. Orchestra leaders such as Thad Jones and Duke Ellington were great role models for her; Schneider too brings out the best in musicians. Everyone was already full of praise for her work when she won her first Grammy in 2005 for the album Concert In The Garden. She now has no fewer than seven Grammys, including two for her creative 2020 album Data Lords, considered by many to be her magnum opus. Its central theme is the stark contrast between the digital world and nature. Schneider is performing the Dutch premiere of her project at the festival in collaboration with the Oslo Jazz Ensemble.
