Bassist Dave Holland (b. 1946) has played with the greatest jazz musicians and collaborated on legendary albums. He grew up in England, left school early and wanted to become a pop musician. But jazz attracted him the most and he swapped his electric bass for the double bass. When he was playing at Ronnie Scott’s in London, Miles Davis discovered him. As a result, Holland moved to the US in the late 1960s and joined Davis’ band. He played on legendary albums like In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew, records that marked the breakthrough of fusion jazz. Holland also worked with greats like Betty Carter, Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Jack DeJohnette and John McLaughlin. The virtuoso bassist has also been active in other genres. At the festival, Holland is appearing with his powerhouse Dave Holland New Quartet with pianist Kris Davis, saxophonist Jaleel Shaw and drummer Nasheet Waits – all giants on the contemporary jazz scene.
