Saxophonist, composer and bandleader Camilla George is one of the most exciting artists on the London jazz scene today. Backed by a fantastic band, she manages to blend Afrobeat, jazz, soul and hip-hop into an organic, hypnotic whole. Born in Eket, Nigeria, George listened to both African and Western music as a child. Fela Kuti, Jackie McLean and Charlie Parker were her role models when she began playing the saxophone at age 11. While still studying at Trinity College of Music in London, George was already performing with the band Jazz Jamaica at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. After she released her debut album Isang in 2014, the Evening Standard dubbed her “The Golden Girl of Jazz”. She followed it up in 2018 with The People Could Fly, the inspiration for which came from the stories enslaved people told their children. Her latest album Ibio Ibio is a tribute to her tribe, the Ibibio.
