American bassist Stephen Bruner a.k.a. Thundercat is one of the pillars of the label Brainfeeder, specializing in electronic music and instrumental hip hop. Before Thundercat released his solo debut The Golden Age Of Apocalypse (co-produced by Flying Lotus) on Brainfeeder in 2011, he had already performed with jazz legends like Stanley Clarke and Herbie Hancock as well as with neo-soul diva Erykah Badu. In 2015 he worked on To Pimp A Butterfly and The Epic, masterpieces by Kendrick Lamar and Kamasi Washington respectively. In 2020 Thundercat’s fourth solo album was released: It Is What It Is, a very personal record he made following the death of his friend, rapper Mac Miller. The album, also produced by Flying Lotus and featuring Kamasi Washington, Steve Lacy and Louis Cole, among others, won a Grammy Award in the category Best Progressive R&B Album.
