London-born tenor saxophonist Nubya Garcia is one of the frontrunners on the exuberant English jazz scene. She has worked extensively with Shabaka Hutchings, played a significant role on the widely acclaimed collective album We Out Here (2018), is co-founder of powerhouse jazz formation Nérija, and made her splendid debut with Source (2020) that received rave reviews. Born to a Guyanese mother and British-Trinidadian father, she was inspired at a young age by musical influences from three different countries. And this is reflected in her work. Together with her band, Garcia performs in the tradition of Coltrane, yet at the same time serving up a distinct mix of calypso rhythms, Afrobeat, drum & bass and Latin funk, including the compelling and uncompromising sax solos of this front woman. With an impeccable British sense of timing and suspense.
