Everything she releases gets showered with awards, from Grammys to an Oscar. America can't get enough of the powerful, soulful songs of H.E.R. In just a few years, she has carved out a place for herself in the tradition of protest singers, with her song I Can't Breathe in particular making a big impression. It became an anthem for the Black Lives Matter protests. In 2021, on her album Back of My Mind, she continued where she left off: a rock-solid record on which Thundercat, among others, collaborated. She often sounds intimate, making songs seem like honest, deep conversations with friends, always with a message of empowerment. During the Covid-19 crisis, she created an Instagram series, Girls With Guitars, that featured female guitarists. She still notices that she is underestimated, “but then when I start playing, it's like: oh, okay!” Underestimation never enters the mind of anyone who hears her play.
