Ben LaMar Gay’s 2018 debut Downtown Castles Can Never Block The Sun was actually more of a greatest hits album than a debut. After all, it was a compilation of seven previously unreleased but already recorded albums. The Chicago-born cornetist is a glutton for music and cannot be placed in a single category. Gay's sound is a unique fusion of various styles. Its influences range from jazz to funk, from R&B to tropicalia and from hip hop to electro. Gay has collaborated with the likes of Jaimie Branch, Slum Village, Bitchin Bajas and Joshua Abrams. Open Arms To Open Us is Gay's second album and he once again pulls out all the stops. The New York Times called him a visionary, while NPR was even more emphatic: “There is no one universe for Ben LaMar Gay, he just sonic booms from one sound to another.”
