When you put two jazz visionaries from different generations together, you can expect them either to clash or create magic. The latter is what happened in the special collaboration between free jazz pioneer Archie Shepp and innovation adventurer Jason Moran. Saxophonist Shepp and pianist Moran got to know each other while playing together and experimenting when they met at festivals. They found they share a devotion to the African-American cultural tradition, identity and history: subjects such as racism and civil rights regularly come up. Their bonding led to the globally acclaimed album Let My People Go (2021), on which the duo puts renowned material - including gospel - in a new light. At NN North Sea Jazz, this dream duo comes together again, but this time as a trio with French jazz singer Marion Rampal, with whom Shepp has worked before. She is praised for her varied repertoire, unique expression and exceptional voice.
