Jazz belongs among the people, not in a museum. From this perspective Melanie Charles started Make Jazz Trill Again in 2016, a project to draw more attention to her beloved genre, from a wider audience and especially from young people. The singer and flute player does so by placing listeners on the wrong foot and deftly crossing boundaries. Charles regularly looks to collaborate with less obvious artists, as can be seen from her guest appearance on the Gorillaz album Humanz (2017). Although she was born and raised in Brooklyn, Charles’ roots are in Haiti, and she is known as one of the most important female artists in Haitian music. Last year, Verve released her album Y'all Don't (Really) Care About Black Women, where she juxtaposes her compositions with modern interpretations of Dinah Washington and Ella Fitzgerald songs, among others.
