“Such a concert is a collective experience, comparable to a kind of network – information goes back and forth in several directions. A situation that involves all of us.” This was how Vijay Iyer described his concert at North Sea Jazz in 2015 some months later. The American-born son of Indian immigrants has been Downbeat Magazine’s Jazz Artist of the Year four times already. Besides being an authoritative jazz musician in New York these days, Iyer also has other talents. He has a degree in mathematics and physics and holds a professorship at Harvard University: a very gifted and multitalented man indeed. His compositions have been performed by the American Composers Orchestra and Iyer writes music for a wide range of ensembles, including full orchestras. In 2015 he recorded Break Stuff, a groundbreaking trio album. In 2021 his album Uneasy was released, on which Linda May Han Oh (bass) and Tyshawn Sorey (drums) complete the trio.
